As the 2012 holder of the EU presidency, Denmark has unveiled its ambitious plans of raising the CO2-reduction target from 20 to 40 per cent by 2020, with the aim of complete phasing out of all fossil fuel use by 2050. For such progressive targets to be met, electricity production from wind power must be increased from 22% of where it stands now, to a whopping 50% in 2020.*
Anders Stouge, VP at Danish Energy Association, will present on the country’s energy roadmap and the role of utilities and consumers alike to realise these ambitious plans during Smart Utilities Scandinavia 2012.
The emphasis is on building new offshore wind parks and ensuring better interconnections not only with its neighbours, but also with the rest of Europe, with the particular emphasis on UK and the Netherlands.
In addition to the expanded export of electricity, the other way to counteract wind intermittency is to utilize surplus electricity locally. Domestic utilities and consortia of partners are hard at work testing cutting-edge smart grid technologies in smart city labs all over the country. The aim is that when fully integrated, e-vehicles, heat pumps & local energy production will lead to 100% energy efficiency and will draw up on purely renewable sources.
The Danes claim that this combination of wind power and smart grid will lead to theirs becoming the first carbon neutral country in the world!
